Session 3

Rethinking the health care system to create value

On May 26, leading experts from Quebec’s health network discussed how to rethink the health system to create value during a Health Summit session hosted by l’Université de Montréal’s H-pod.

Panellists included Dr. Abdo Shabah, emergency physician and CMA board member, Joanne Castonguay, Health and Welfare Commissioner, Dr. Lucie Opatrny, Assistant Deputy Minister for Quebec’s MSSS Direction des affaires universitaires, médicales, infirmières et pharmaceutiques, and Edith Lambert, a family caregiver with lived experience.

The webinar was hosted by Jean-Louis Denis, Professor of Health Management and Policy at l’École de santé publique de l’Université de Montréal (ESPUM) and co-director of H-pod.

Five key take-aways from the session are to:

  • Change our perspective for better patient care
  • Invite new players to the table and give voice to marginalized groups and individuals
  • Develop effective community-based care
  • Foster innovation
  • Secure solid data for decision-making

When we assess our health system’s performance, we must consider whether the health of the population is improving. And because this is a public system, we must optimize how we use our resources.”  — Joanne Castonguay, Health Summit panellist
